Emissions of greenhouse gases lead to a warming of the atmosphere that drives dynamic change within the climate system: continuing emissions are increasing risks to human life and livelihoods across the globe.
Greenhouse gas emissions are associated with all resource use: we at LINPAC are taking responsibility for our own emissions, with targets to reduce them significantly in the coming years.
The impact of increasing regulatory attention on emissions intensive activities has been improved local environmental management systems at our sites, to fit the needs of local regulation. We want our environmental monitoring to a reach comparable high standard at all sites. We are beginning the process by focusing on several key areas that represent our strongest opportunities for both monitoring and impact improvement: these can become catalysts for further change.
Waste Reduction: Recycling, Recyclate and Consumer Awareness
All plastic can be recycled, but in reality this is not always viable. PET is commonly collected and LINPAC supports campaigns to increase this proportion. Consumer recycled material now forms over 80% of our purchased PET and our target is to increase this further.
Our Vacurema super-cleaning technology guarantees food safety andmeans we can use up to 100% recycled material. Trays made out of recycled material do not only reduce overall use of virgin polymer, but the carbon footprint associated with a recycled product is much lower.
We also have an important part to play in making sure consumers can recycle as many of our products as possible, including minimising the use of complex films that reduce the quality of recyclate stock. Our Rfresh Elite trays are 100% recyclable and use a small amount of soluble glue, as opposed to the PET-PP film used in most typical trays: our innovations team has won multiple awards for the product!
We actively take part in industry campaigns to increase awareness of issues surrounding litter, recycling and food waste. It is important that consumers are able to make responsible choices that help reduce the overall impact of the food supply chain.
We have reduced our electricity consumption by 4% between 2010 and 2014 and continue to run projects to improve efficiency.
Our international business moves both products and people every day. The majority of our products are shipped with 3T, who group orders from multiple organisations together to maximise journey efficiency: this reduces the carbon footprint of our distribution.
One of our areas of significant opportunity is employee travel- whether commute or as part of business relations. We aim to reduce these emissions through video-calling, car sharing and increased use of public land transport where possible.
